We have all had the same problem – pennies in our pockets and nothing in the bank, and still too stubborn or proud to sink to the level of that “one” friend who is a dirty network marketer. You could never be that annoying person who ceaselessly pesters their family and friends to join their Multi-Level Marketing “get-rich-quick” scheme. Not you…
The truth is, network marketing has changed – a LOT. It is no longer the place for business “losers” and outcasts that it used to be. Even before the recent economic downturn, it had started its metamorphosis into a very high tech industry – a place for winners that know how to leverage the internet and the efforts of others. Dragging your friends and family members to skin care or tasting parties has become SO yesterday.
Now, I probably shouldn’t be so hard the old style of networking, because, believe it or not, it can still work. People that struggle to be successful by the antiquated art of inviting people to hotel and home meetings usually struggle because of one of the following reasons.
- Poor Posture – They don’t believe in themselves or their product/opportunity, and EVERYBODY can sense it.
- Pre-Judging Prospects – When the one person they think will join their business for certain doesn’t, they panic and think that if so-and-so didn’t join them, none of their other friends will ever join. This paralyzes them with fear and they stop inviting people because they have already determined that nobody else is going to join their team.
- Inconsistency – When they don’t consistently work their business, they can’t expect the results. Most people are not natural born inviters. Without consistently working to improve they never reach the skill level needed to succeed. Practice makes perfect!
- Laziness – Take this how you want, but we in the United States of America are LAZY compared to our foreign counterparts.
It doesn’t help that when most people hear the words network marketing, there are frequently dirty connotations that come along with it. Beyond the normal pyramid/ponzi scheme comments, you will get people that will have a “get-rich-quick”, something-for-nothing mentality which doesn’t make things any easier.
The truth is that network marketing is actually work – the person that signs up expecting to get rich off of 1-2 hours of real work a month, who then quits 6 weeks down the road because “network marketing doesn’t work” has given the industry a bad name.
Hopefully by now you are asking yourself, “If network marketing is ‘so hard’ why would anybody ever do it in the first place?” The answer to that question is many-fold and may surprise you.
To begin with, according to the Western World actuarial statistics, at the age of 65, 54% of people are broke, 36% have already passed away, and 5% are still working. That leaves only 5% of the population at age 65 that is well-to-do. So what is the difference between the well-to-do five per-centers and the rest of us? They own their own businesses.
“But what about what my parents and teachers told me? What about going to school, getting a good education, getting a good paying job with a large company?”
That has been pretty sound advice for a long time, but there has been a paradigm shift and it is no longer the best course of action. One big reason is that, with increased competition, technological advances, and outsourcing of jobs overseas, companies no longer have to pay you what you are worth. In fact, even if they wanted to (which they don’t) they wouldn’t be able to do it and still stay in business.
Byron Belka, my good friend and mentor put it very well when he said that jobs don’t pay you enough to set you free. They only pay enough to keep you coming back. He told me of a conversation he had with one of his Eastern European team members in which they told him that we in America are the highest paid slaves in the world. It’s sad to admit, but it is very true.
Think about how many people you know that are trapped in a job that they hate. Why do they keep doing it?
They simply don’t have any other options. They can’t demand what they want from their boss and expect to keep their job for very long. It’s ironic that we hold on the tightest to the things that hold us back the most.
In most jobs, you work for an employer who is after exactly the same thing you are after – wealth (however you define it). The catch-22 here is that, generally speaking, only one of you can have it. Your boss can either pay you what you are worth and have it cut into his bottom line, or he can save the fatlings for himself by exploiting you and your skills in exchange for a few measly dollars an hour.
Owning their own JOB has gotten most Americans nowhere, and it doesn’t look like a positive change is in store.
So how can you change your situation?
Network Marketing is the only way I know of that an average person can start their own business for under a thousand dollars and be able to turn a profit in the first few weeks or months.
But this is only one of the advantages. Owning your own business, whether it is run from home or an office, has huge tax advantages. You will want to talk to your CPA about what can and cannot be written off as a business expense, but in general as an employee, you get paid, pay your taxes, and then get to pay your bills with whatever is left over. As a business owner, you receive your income, pay your bills and expenses, andonly then do you have to pay taxes on what is left over. This can save you hundreds, if not thousands of dollars each year.
In addition to the tax benefits, as the “big cheese” you have increased flexibility – you can choose your own hours and pick the people that you want to work with. (This can be to the detriment of the undisciplined business owner – but if you are motivated to get your work done you will have no problem with this.)
Network marketing has provided the opportunity for many people to travel the world and to be able to write it off as a business expense.
The best part about networking in my opinion is the fact that it is exactly the opposite of the corporate world. Instead of competing with and stepping on people to get to the top, you get to the top by helping as many other people as possible achieve the same thing you are after – their financial dreams and goals. The relationships you build are win-win relationships instead of win-lose. This will not only do great things for your pocketbook, but for your soul.
Ultimately, one of the reasons people start their own businesses as network marketers is because of the opportunity it provides them to get rich quick-ER. Like I said before, anybody looking for an easy way out of the rat race is probably looking in the wrong place if they are coming to network marketing. It’s not any easier than working a 9-5, but it can pay you much, much better.
A typical job comes with an income ceiling that you will never be able to pass, no matter how badly you want to. This is not true of network marketing, and sales jobs in general. The limits to the kind of income you want to achieve are set by nobody but you – the individual salesman. This is why, despite their potentially unstable nature, so many people select them as a profession.
In addition to having unlimited earning potential, in order to truly become wealthy, you need to get your hands on some leverage by having at least one of two things working for you – money and people.
Now, many of us would love it if we could have money work for us… but in order for that to happen, you have to have money in the first place. The easier way to create leverage out of thin air is by starting a network marketing business, through which you can leverage the efforts of many other self motivated people.

In closing, network marketing done the wrong way has hurt a lot of people, and has rightly so gained a besmirched reputation. As jobs leave the US market by the thousands, network marketing could be the boat that will save our economy, as it encourages the expansion and building of foreign countries job markets without the risk of losing more jobs.
