Law of the Harvest Archives

I recently acquired a copy of Mike Dillard and Mark Weiser’s Black Belt Recruiting Course and have learned a lot of things that are drastically improving my business… so many that I couldn’t share them all here if I wanted to. I do however, want to share one simple idea that Mark Weiser pointed out about having the right mindset in network marketing.

I often read and hear about the debate on whether it is a person’s mindset or their skills and techniques that make the biggest difference in their success in network marketing.

On one hand you have the airy fairy motivators that say all you have to do to attain a result is think about it enough and it will materialize. On the other hand, you have the drill sergeants that give you checklist and scripts of not only what to do and say, but how to say it.

Which of the two works better?

I’m not really sure I can answer that… but why settle for one or the other when you can have both?

Mark gave the example of the athletes at the Olympics, but you can find similar examples pretty much anywhere you look.

Let’s use golf as an example.

You’ll find that there are lots of different types of swings, but that it’s not necessarily the technically sound swing that generates the low score on the course. There are probably a lot of people that can swing the club just like Tiger Woods, but few, if any, can even come close to beating him.

Why on earth is that? Shouldn’t two similar swings produce similar results? In network marketing terms, if you do what millionaires do, shouldn’t you be a millionaire?

Well, as Mark put it, it is not just about technique. It’s about technique applied with the proper mindset. Tiger has a great swing, but he also has the confident mindset to maximize its application. Millionaire network marketers have great skills, but even more importantly, they have above average mindsets.

So that’s the straight answer. But that may not be helpful for a lot of you that are reading this.

How exactly does one go about developing the skills, and even more importantly, the proper mindset?

In one word… practice.

Do something, evaluate how it worked, and then do it again.

I’m sure Tiger’s swing didn’t just happen. I’m sure it was a long process of honing and improving it until he got it just the way he wanted it. Then he committed it to muscle memory by practicing it over and over and over again.

Constantly be learning about the industry and the skill sets that you are trying to develop. As you learn new things, implement them and repeat them over and over, and they will become easy. Just focus on one thing at a time though… otherwise you may get overwhelmed or discouraged and quit practicing.

Which brings us to our next subject… developing mindset.

Just by continually researching and studying successful people and the techniques they used to achieve it will be a great starting place to developing the proper mindset. The more you learn, the fewer people there will be that know more than you. That alone will give you confidence and improve your self concept.

Another way is to make sure to always be feeding your mind good information. If you are constantly dwelling on what isn’t working, you are going to have a freaking hard time creating a positive mindset. You might want to get a copy of The Greatest Salesman in the World by Og Mandino, and read it through to the end… all ten scrolls, each one for thirty days.

But developing the proper mindset is only 33% mental. The other 67% is physical and spiritual. It’s really a function of how you feel about yourself, and you can’t feel 100% unless you are well balanced. So make sure you are spiritually and physically where you want to be as well.

Isn’t it amazing how almost everything in this industry comes back to personal development and mindset? Makes you think that all that hullabaloo about thoughts being things might actually be true.

I can’t remember exactly where I heard this first, but I know it was Timothy Gallway that said it.

“When we plant a rose seed in the Earth, we notice it is small, but we do not criticize it as ‘rootless and stemless’. We treat it as a seed, giving it the water and nourishment required of a seed.

When it first shoots up out of the Earth, we don’t condemn it as immature and underdeveloped; we do not criticize the buds for not being open when they appear. We stand in wonder at the process taking place, and give the plant the care it needs at each stage of its development.

The rose is a rose from the time it is a seed to the time it dies. Within it, at all times, it contains its whole potential. It seems to be constantly in the process of change. Yet at each state, at each moment, it is perfectly all right as it is.

A flower is not better when it blooms than when it is merely a bud; at each stage it is the same thing… a flower in the process of expressing its potential.”

Wherever you are at developmentally, don’t compare yourself to other “roses” that have already bloomed. They were probably planted before you were.

Just stand back and appreciate where you have come from and where you are headed. Keep looking for and gathering nutrients that you need to continue growing and before you know it, you will be the attractive rose that draws people to it effortlessly.

Mastering Your Mind… and MasterMinds!

So like I said in my last post, the No Excuses Summit in Vegas last weekend was incredible. One of my favorite parts was being able to meet and network with all of the other top internet marketers that I see online every day.

As I was talking with David Wood, who recently dethroned Cedrick Harris as the top earner in the number one attraction marketing system on the planet (MLSP) we came to the subject of mastermind groups and why they are so important in helping burgeoning internet and network marketers succeed in today’s market.

You may be wondering exactly what a “Master Mind” is. According to Napoleon Hill, author of Think and Grow Rich (as well as a slew of other great books), it is defined as the “coordination of knowledge and effort, in a spirit of harmony, between two or more people for the attainment of a definite purpose”.

Here’s the bottom line. Two heads are better than one.

I don’t care if you are a freaking Einstein, you will be able to achieve more through the power of a mastermind alliance.

One of the kind or freaky things about a master mind group is that when you put your heads together, it is more like multiplication than addition. (However, when you are doing mastermind multiplication, 1X1=3. :) Keep reading to see what I mean…)

Let me begin my explanation of “Master Mind Multiplication” with another quote from Think and Grow Rich, which by the way I would highly recommend checking out from your local library if you haven’t already read it.

“No two minds ever come together without, thereby, creating a third invisible, intangible force which may be likened to a third mind.”

Are you picturing Siamese triplets right now?

Well quit it because that’s not what he meant. ;)

The best way to understand Hill’s definition is through what I like to call “Master Mind Multiplication”…

Now this explanation doesn’t really work if you are just multiplying the number of minds that are coming together, because clearly one times one is really only one. But if you look at it in a little bit of a different light, and multiply the contents of the minds instead of the minds themselves, you will start to understand how it works a little better. (Hopefully the quantified contents of the minds are not in the single digits. Sorry for my math nerdiness…)

For whatever reason, two minds together are more powerful than the same two minds apart. Here are some of my theories for why this is (which is really not new information).

Beside the whole point of the freaky third head popping out of thin are, some of the benefits of a mastermind group include the accountability and support that come with it. One of the simplest reasons that people get more done in mastermind groups is because they have somebody else that knows their goals and desires, and not only encourages them to achieve them, but holds them accountable when they don’t.

Just those tangible benefits alone should be enough to make you want to go out and create a mastermind group this second, but the real power of a mastermind comes from what Napoleon Hill was talking about in his book. I wish I could explain it better than I already have, but I’m afraid I don’t even quite understand exactly how or why it works 100%.

This, however, I do understand – there is no faster way to accomplish your goals than by creating an alliance with somebody that has harmonious goals and that can also benefit from teaming up with you.

If you want to learn more about masterminds, I recommend getting your hands on a copy of Napoleon Hill’s Think and Grow Rich, or better yet, find yourself a mastermind group to be a part of. There’s no better way to learn than through experience itself. You can even create your own group, just be careful about who you choose to be a part of it.

Want to be a part of our mastermind group? Come see what we’re about…

No More Excuses… :)

WOW!

Just got back from Vegas and the No Excuses Summit put on by my friends Ray and Ferny of SEONetworker.com and what a weekend it was!

If you missed it I am sorry for you… because it will be impossible for me or anybody else to share all the incredible information and training that the speakers shared with us – but don’t worry! I will do my best to pass on some of the things that I found most useful because helping each other succeed is what it’s all about, right?

I wouldn’t want to keep you in the dark even if you had the opportunity to be there and passed it up… (Although if you did and decided not to attend you probably ought to get a slap on the wrist or something… SHAME ON YOU!) ;)

Ultimately, the training and content that was shared was incredible, but even if I could do a mind dump for you, you still would have missed out on the chance to network with all the biggest names in the industry! You really can’t put a price tag on that… So next time (if there even is a next time) NO EXCUSES!

For now I will just share some of the things that Mike Dillard shared… he very well may have been one of my favorite parts of the whole event.

He didn’t have a presentation prepared because in his words, we were all at different skill levels and he had no idea what to say, so he just came prepared to answer our questions. For over an hour, he was in the hot-seat as some of the attendee’s fired their questions at him (along with a lot of gratitude). It was really amazing to hear his responses – completely unrehearsed and 100% genuine.

That is unequivocally one of the reasons that Mike has done so well in the network marketing industry, because he is good at helping people solve their problems. He doesn’t pitch a business or chase after people to follow him. He just finds out what people want and does everything he can to help them get it. The law of attraction at its finest.

That’s really all that it comes down to in this industry. It doesn’t matter what business you are in. You will not be successful just because you have the best comp plan or the most amazing product. Your success will really only depend on the skill sets that you have developed and how you use them to benefit other people.

If you are feeling a little bit like Napoleon Dynamite because you don’t have any good skills (bow skills, nunchuck skills, etc…) then take a little closer look at yourself. You probably do have some pretty amazing skills that you may have overlooked – just like Napoleon’s mad dancing skills, or his incredible artistic ablilities… :)

If you still don’t think that you have any good “skills” (and even if you do have some) then get off your butt and start working on some. If you spend a little time every day on educating and improving yourself, it won’t be long before you know more than most other people because, let’s face it, the average person won’t get off their butt and turn off the automatic intelligence reducer (i.e. television).

Even if you feel like you will look ridiculous (like Napoleon undoubtedly does in this video), give whatever you do 100%. If you do anything half hearted, people will notice. Believe it or not, people actually like it when you put yourself out there at the risk of looking silly. Otherwise you blend in with the rest of the noise out there in the marketplace. Differentiate yourself by being as authentic as possible. Tell people like it is. They will like it.

Mike’s recommendation if you are a beginner would be to start with copy writing – the art of salesmanship on paper. This will go a long way to help you communicate effectively with your audience, something that you absolutely must learn to do to succeed in this industry.

Where ever you start, just remember that slow and steady wins the race. If people are laughing at you because you are taking the time to do it right, who gives a crap. There really is no shortcut to anyplace worth going, and you will find that out if you just keep putting one foot in front of the other. If you’re consistent, you’ll soon be amazed at how far you’ve come.

Cinderella and Success…

So you have all heard it before… if you want to become a success in the network marketing and direct sales industry, (or in any industry for that matter) you need to become a leader.

For a lot of people that is a very scary thought. I remember when I was first getting started in this industry sitting in front of the person that was pitching me on his business opportunity thinking, “This all sounds awesome… but I don’t really want to be you.”

I didn’t want to be the presenter… I just wanted to be the quiet person in the background making all the money… :) Sound familiar?

The problem with that is… everything! There is no conceivable way that somebody can do nothing and get paid for it. If somebody appears to be getting paid for nothing then look a little deeper… they did something in the past to deserve what they are being paid today.

Now, obviously I have changed the way I think and here’s the good news – so can you!

A very successful businessman that I had the pleasure of meeting recently shared with me, in a way I have never before heard, about becoming a leader in this industry.

He shared with me briefly the story of Cinderella – how she went from being a poor servant to her step mother and sisters to being the beautiful princess that she became.

But what changed? How did she become the princess?

Well, as far as I can tell, the only thing that changed, with a little bit of Disney Magic, was her outfit. With a new dress and shiny glass slippers she was able to go to the ball and meet the prince. She managed to catch his eye and the rest is history.

But looking back, Cinderella was still the same loving, considerate person without those fancy clothes.

I’m sure if she acted like her step-sisters, the story would have ended happily never after.

You see, there were probably hundreds of young women at that ball that were after the prince’s hand, but none of them ended up winning the prize. They may have looked the part, but most of them were probably more like the self-centered step-sisters than they were like Cinderella.

In the network marketing industry, there are a lot of people that “dress up” every day to try and create an image for themselves that they really have no intention of living up to. They sell themselves as a leader, expert, or “guru”, but have no desire to go through the process of becoming one.

The reason Cinderella became the princess is because she was already a princess. She just didn’t have the dress.
She wasn’t born that way, but throughout her life she served with a smile and developed into the princess she became. Dressing up like one for her wasn’t too much of a stretch.

So if you are trying to “hack it” in the network marketing industry but are having a hard time, might I recommend looking inside yourself and asking if you are really a leader, expert, or guru you are dressed up as? There is absolutely nothing wrong with dressing up if you are sincerely trying to become one, but this isn’t Halloween. Posing as one will only work for so long… you’ve got to become one.

The good news is that if you really put the work into yourself, the difference between where you are at and becoming a top income earner is just a dress and a shiny pair of slippers.

You can do it and you are closer than you think you are…
